Having a fast draw from your holster is a very important skill that needs to be part of every shooter’s regular training. However, just having a fast draw won’t necessarily save your hide in every situation. Most self defense shootings happen at close range and the other guy isn’t waiting for you to complete your draw and present your gun. If your attacker is close it is very likely that you will have to divert an attack and create distance so that you can deploy your weapon (whatever it is). Incorporating motion into your holster training should be a regular part of your training. You can move in any direction as you draw and this needs to be trained dry until you are very confident not only with your trigger and muzzle discipline, but also moving while focusing on the target. Start slow and let the speed build up with your comfort level. Whether the attacker has a weapon or not you may need to block or evade an oncoming attack before being able to introduce your weapon so don’t neglect training for this. You can’t really train this with another person using live ammo, but you also don’t necessarily need fancy gear like UTM guns. A SIRT pistol or even a blue gun will get you there too. Don’t worry about fancy moves. Shoulder checks can be a very effective and intuitive means of stopping many punches, slashes or swings. A “Split X” block can cover any low line attack. Learning these two simple defensive concepts can cover the majority of your defensive angles, allowing you to keep that initial attack from taking you out of the fight. From there you can push or kick or move away. The purpose of this video is to show the importance of incorporating motion and basic empty hand skills into your holster work. If you just plan on standing in place and drawing your gun you may be in for a rude surprise. We’re not showing any fancy moves or techniques here and don’t expect this to look pretty when you’re going full speed, but it’s an important and overlooked aspect of defensive firearms training. If you want to train these things come take a class. Don’t just go in the back yard with your buddy and break each other’s bones. That’s not productive. Definitely don’t be a dumbass and train this with either live firearms or blades.
