The Mossberg’s 940 JM Pro, the improvements on this shotgun are considerable and had direct input from the ultimate competition shooter Jerry Miculek. Starting at the front, there’s a HiViz front sight. The 940 comes with three Briley Acu-Set extended choke tubes for the 24-inch barrel. An oversized bolt handle and bolt release to speed up loading, as does the re-machined and beveled feeding port. At this time, the 940 JM Pro is the only out-of-the-box shotgun that’s capable of quad loading. The shell lifter was extended due to the fact that standard length one had a tendency to grab thumbs. The forearm is also slimmed down cut loading times and the magazine has been re-engineered as has the magazine follower. For easy cleaning, the steel portion of the magazine tube, gas piston, gas ring, hammer and sear are boron nitride finished. The receiver is drilled and tapped to accept a rail for an optic, and the stock is adjustable for length-of-pull, drop and cast. The gas system was redesigned to cycle more quickly and more reliably with a variety of 2 ¾” and 3” 12-ga. shot shells. This system incorporates a stepped and vented-spacer component that sheds moisture and fouling with each shot fired. This system successfully reduces maintenance time by firing up to 1,500 rounds in between cleanings instead of 600 or so. Plus, the gas ports have been enlarged for better reliability with light loads such as ⅞-ounce slugs. Mossberg has also has a stronger magazine tube with no clamp that connects the magazine tube and barrel to improve accuracy. Another subtle but important change has to do with the recoil spring system. By shortening it, this shotgun could be outfitted with an adjustable synthetic shoulder stock. It ships with a full set of grip and recoil pad spacers that allow the drop and cast to be adjusted along with the length of pull to be shifted between 13" to 14.25".
