This is definitely one of the most fun types of weapons to shoot. We were incredibly lucky and had the chance not only to play with a belt fed but the coolest new one that’s not even on the market yet. This FMG is made by Daycraft Systems and is a total beast. It’s a 7.62X51 (like the 240B) but weighs in at just under the 249 (5.56), which makes it unbelievably easy to use. All of the controls are exactly where you would want them to be and it was very reliable. If you’re new to the whole SAW world… reliability is a huge issue with most machine guns. They’re a total pain in the ass! Despite how great the gun itself is, carrying one of these for a living is not all butterflies and rainbows though. If you’re working one that means you have to carry it a lot more than shoot it. It’s still one of the most important tools in the modern military’s arsenal due to the fact that, in the hands of a pro, it can put a lot of lead pretty accurately on target real fast. If you aren’t a gunner in a military service and you go rent one to play with you may only be allowed to shoot it laying down or attached to some sort of mount. Still fun, but not the real skill you need in the field (unless you’re lucky enough to be a door gunner or similar). In this video we’re discussing some of the basic mechanics of properly shooting a SAW type weapon from the basic standing/kneeling/prone positions. There are many more details involved but this should get you started. Safety: There are inherent dangers that accompany shooting these, obviously. Don’t start off doing the “Rambo thing.” In order to prevent “cooking off” most squad level machine guns operate from an open bolt configuration. This means that, mechanically, they work very differently from AR’s or most other guns we’re typically used to using. Loading/unloading and manipulating this machine is different. Learn it from someone who really knows it’s use and how to teach it before you mess around! Get used to shooting in the prone position before moving onto other positions where all of the gun’s weight and recoil are controlled solely by your body. In the prone: learn how to control your trigger so that you can achieve consistent single shots, as well as 3-5 and 5-7 round bursts Learn to feel and hear what the gun is communicating to you (stoppages/bolt position/incorrect rate of fire/loose parts etc.) Get very comfortable with shoulder firing the gun while looking through the sights before starting to learn how to “walk shots in” from the under the arm positions.
