AR with AK MAGS | The LAR-47 | Tactical Rifleman

We in the US military always loved the M-16/M-4 family of rifles. That includes the AR-15s that most American gun enthusiasts hold high on their list of favorite weapons. Yes, there are short comings. Yes, there have been lots of improvements over the years; but the AR rifle has always been better than it's peers. As a Green Beret, we often worked with indigenous personnel from our host countries that were armed with AK-47s. The AK-47 is a decent weapon; easy to use and maintain, and was very reliable. However, the AK's biggest selling point was the ammo: 7.62mm x 39mm. While it's definitely not a sniper round; the accuracy was acceptable. Effective range was decent. However, where it really shined was in barrier penetration and terminal performance in the body. If we had to chose between our trusted M-4s or picking up a "local" AK-47, we would of course keep our trusted M-4. Ergonomics equate to speed. Hell, just the selector-lever alone makes it better than an AK. That said, as a Green Beret working with "AK carrying jundies," if we could ask for just one change to our trusty M-4s; it would be that they be modified to run the same AK mags and ammo that our jundies carried. Imagine a better performing bullet and, instead of each of us carrying 10 mags, having hundreds of soldiers around us carrying hundreds of mags for us to share if needed in a gun fight. Well, back early on in the Global War on Terror, Steve Holland went to "Star Fleet Command" and requested just that. The contract was quickly killed (also by Steve... long story), and he went on to design the 6.8SPC. A much better round, that never caught on. While the contract was closed, Rock River Arms went on to finish their design. This week's video is about the LAR-47; an AR style rifle that takes AK mags in the glorious 7.62x39 caliber.
