8.6 BLACKOUT by GORILLA ARMS | Tactical Rifleman

Here's a sexy 'new" beast for you... the 8.6 Blackout by Gorilla Firearms. I found this monster at SHOT Show. What impressed me about it is the 1:3 inch twist barrel. The fastest rifle twist barrel I have ever shot was a 1:8 inch twist 308; and it had a very short barrel life. So, what is 8.6 Blackout? 8.6 Blackout was developed by Kevin Brittingham and his team at Q. It is often referred to as 300 Blackout's big brother and its easy to see why. What 300BLK provided to the AR-15 platform, 8.6BLK does for AR-10’s and bolt actions. Same bolt face, same magazines. The parent case is 6.5 Creedmoor, which was trimmed down and necked up for a .338 projectile. Barrels are being run with a fast 1:3 twist, which creates devastating terminal performance. Although 8.6BLK is larger than its 300BLK brother, the subsonic ammunition offerings make it just as quiet. With the 1:3 twist, supersonic rounds come out above 500,000 RPM’s with subsonic loads around 250,000 RPM’s. The high rotational velocity helps to deliver devastating terminal performance. The fast twist also allows for shorter barrel lengths and more compact weapons systems, while still achieving superior projectile function. Although Gorilla Firearms have a reduced case capacity and lower muzzle velocity for what typical .338 projectiles are designed to function at. The fast twist delivers violent expansion and greater wound cavities. For supersonic 8.6BLK they load the 210gr Barnes TSX projectile that was optimized for their loading standards. It has a muzzle velocity of 1970 fps out of this 12” barrel. For subsonics they have two loads for each projectile offering, one for 8” and 12” barrels and another for 16”. They load the 300gr Sierra MatchKings for Subsonic range rounds. They also machine a 285gr Solid Copper Fracturing projectile in-house. This projectile is designed to fragment when impacting a fluid area, shedding four pedals that are about 40gr’s a piece, penetrating radially to a depth of about 10 inches. The approximate 125gr base of the projectile then penetrates to a depth of 16”-19”. This projectile was designed around a "government customer" who wanted a subsonic offering that terminally performed at distance. They get functionality out of this subsonic round beyond 200 yards. Gorilla offers GF-10 and bolt action platforms chambered in 8.6BLK. Gas gun configurations come in 8”, 12”, and 16” barrels. Bolt actions in 12” and 16” barrels. They offer customizable options like fixed or foldable stocks, cerakote patterns, and accessory add-ons like an Atlas Bipod or customizable case foam inserts. All rifles ship in a Pelican Vault case.
